By Barb Tiews, of Barb's Sewing School

Since I was a child, I have known the joy and fulfillment of sewing my own clothes and creative craft items. When I was 3 years old, my mom allowed me to begin hand embroidery. By age seven, I had begun sewing on the machine- doll clothes, costumes, and clothing for myself. If I wasn't at school or playing outside with my friends, my favorite hobby was sewing.

Sewing is a wonderful, fulfilling skill. One does not have to be a particular size, or strength, to experience the wonder of color and texture associated with sewing. As I moved through grade school and into college, I continued to hone my sewing skills, including costuming for the theatre dept. at my high school, altering ready-to-wear for myself and others, and sewing
whatever caught my fancy.

In college I purchased a used sewing machine and continued to sew. After marrying and having children, sewing provided a natural outlet for my creative desires, and a tremendous help in caring for my family.

My sewing skills have helped me in community service: quilts for Safe House in Ann Arbor, layette bags for Pregnancy Counseling Center, layettes for Mott Children's Hospital, including preemie layettes, sewing merit badge instruction for the Girl Scouts, cancer care pillows for post-operative breast cancer patients.

Whatever passion grabs me , there's always a place to use my sewing skills for myself and others. I have a husband, four grown children, two grandchildren and extended family and I still sew for them all! What a pleasure!
